“Quiere tener hijos y casarse. Esa es una de las razones por las que aceptó ser entrevistada. Además de servir como ejemplo para muchas personas que viven negando su realidad”, finalizó Llosa.

CAPITÁN EP QUE AHORA ES MARICIELO DECLARA SU AMOR A CONDUCTOR DE CUARTO PODER:
“Me gusta Tola”

Feliz.

Today we were supposed to take another trip out of Cancun to visit Tulum, one of the most spectacular natural beauties in the Riviera Maya. However, the lot of us are far more interested in working on our melanoma, shopping for cheap Zara outfits at the local mall, drinking fruity alcoholic beverages poolside, and reading trashy historical fiction, so we convinced our hosts that this was really the best way to experience Cancun, rather than traveling two hours away to hike and take photos covered in sweat. And we were right.

Cancun may be about partying and wet t-shirt contests and tequila soaked mega clubs to the average underage US high school senior, but for myself and my companions (which include the aforementioned Miguel, Megan, and Charity, as well as Alex, Carla, Carly, and Felice) Cancun is about chillin’. And chillin’ is what we did – ALL DAY LONG.

Miguel and I started off the day with my third favorite thing about hotels besides Jacuzzi jet bathtubs and beds with marshmallow pillows – room service. I love how it arrives under a shiny dome, how the portions are just right so I don’t feel bloated afterwards, and the coffee comes by the pot, not the cup. I love how they whisk it away and I don’t have to ruin my $10 manicure doing dishes. I love that I can eat in bed and not worry about staining the sheets, because dammit, they are not mine and I can enjoy my eggs Benedict while watching nip/tuck in Spanish! Our food was delicious, the sun streamed in from the deck, and I was ready to hit the pool – my sunburn had started to peel already, which was a sure sign that it was time to jump back on the tan train, this time with SPF 30.

We spend the next four hours or so laying out, jumping in to swim and float. The water temperature down here is what the pools in heaven must feel like – it’s just cold enough to cool you down, but warm enough to not shock your bloodstream. I found a big globe of seaweed and put in on Miguel’s head like an afro. He didn’t find this very funny.

Later on, we hop on one of the many buses that run up and down Cancun’s main strip – these are the same buses you would take if you were a high school senior on Spring Break heading out to the clubs. Cancun isn’t the safest city, at all, and it’s not recommended you walk around at night – these buses run nearly every two minutes and cost literally, no joke, like 10 cents US. Taking a cab would cost you eons or more, and you wouldn’t want to take a cab anyway, as I’ve heard stories of tourists being sold into white slavery.

Anyway, Megan and Miguel and I head down the strip and get off at one of the malls – I realize that I live in New York City and could find anything I could ever want to buy there, but I’m convinced there could be deals to be had. I mean, if our bus ride only costs 10 cents, imagine how much an adorable shift from Zara might cost here! At the mall there’s tons of knick knack stores that sell crude and funny t-shirts and weird dolphin ashtrays – I’m tempted to buy a Corona towel, but talk myself out of it.

We hit the Starbucks like a bunch of pathetic, ugly Americans. Carla told us earlier that apparently Starbucks is huge in Mexico, which you wouldn’t expect since coffee in Mexico is fabulous and cheap on its own, but something about the Frappuccino seems to be universal. I go into Zara and buy a fabulous little party dress which, to my total pleasure, is about 10% cheaper than what it would be back home. Mission accomplished. Before dinner we have drinks at the poolside deck bar and I decide to challenge myself by downing red wine, then margaritas, then white wine.

I’m wearing my new dress, but didn’t anticipate such gusty wind, which is making my dress pouf in such a way that I look pregnant with twins. This only serves to cement Miguel’s frequently made point that the empire-waist dresses I insist on buying are really just French for maternity wear. I chow down on ceviche and salad and get drunk. Just because clubbing isn’t on the itinerary, doesn’t mean Cancun doesn’t look and feel a whole lot better less than sober.

I head home tomorrow, secure in the knowledge that my peeling sunburn will eventually make me the kind of tan that my pasty friends will envy; that I am fat from too many fajitas and sugar-laced cocktails and therefore will need to do a full yoga detox the second I get home; and that there really is no more beautiful beach than the one in front of the Presidente Intercontinental in Cancun, except maybe in Tulum. Not that I got off my classy, lazy butt to go there.

Two weeks after his reconnaissance of the coast via helicopter, Artie is leading a meeting of six wealthy, gay developers, explaining the plan about to be hatched. They’re going to turn the sleepy seaside town of Long Spit into a hot spot for gay and lesbian tourists — whether the residents of Long Spit agree to this transformation or not.

“Setting couldn’t be more perfect,” he says, describing the town’s protected beach, existing galleries and antique shops, quaint bed-and-breakfast inns and a huge hotel ripe for rehab. ” ‘Course, this sort of thing has never been done from a standing start. Guess we have to figure how to get it moving on all fronts at once.”

That’s from the beginning of William Storandt’s carefree novel The Summer They Came, and in the rest of his story the developers do get things moving on all fronts — through sneakiness and deception. Basically overnight the rainbow flags unfurl, and hilarity ensues.

In reality, however, gay travel destinations have come out of the closet much more slowly, many of them building on century-old traditions as “artist colonies.” But in recent decades, as gays and lesbians became more visible and empowered — and as businesses have developed an attraction to the plentiful gay dollar — they began openly marketing destinations as safe, fun getaways or party zones for the queer as folk and the L words.

In the travel business, this is just good niche marketing: Gays and lesbians travel more than most people. According to a recent survey by the National Gay Newspaper Guild, seven out of 10 U.S. adults say they’ve traveled within the country during the last year, but those numbers jump to nine out of 10 for gays and lesbians. The survey found they fly more, too: U.S. adults claimed an average of 1.3 flights in the last year; gays and lesbians claimed an average of 2.9 flights.

Few tourist destinations have gone untested by gay travelers, but certain spots are pinker than others. Historians are still offering competing theories as to how San Francisco and its infamous Castro district became the holy grail for gay travelers, pointing to everything from a West Coast libertarian tradition rooted in piracy and gambling to the simple fact that as a huge embarkation point for servicemen during World War II the city was occupied by, ahem, a lot of single and/or lonely men.

From Provincetown, Mass., to Key West, Fla., and from Russian River, Calif., to Rehoboth Beach, Del. — the histories of gay-friendly towns often are similar. In almost every case, it began with an “artist colony.” The artists came for waterside inspiration, invited celebrity friends and threw, as one Provincetown chronicler described, “socially lenient” parties. Years after the world wars, when the towns shouldered economic slumps, gays and lesbians usually were the ones who came back, bought depressed properties, rehabbed and renovated, and — often beginning around the dawn of the 1980s — opened the B&Bs. Gay business guilds formed, ads showed up in The Advocate (the national news magazine for gays and lesbians), and old-timers grumbled a bit about all the same-sex hand-holding on the beach — until the new sales tax receipts came in.

I woke up this morning with sunburn. Know how you can tell that your sunburn is bad? You can feel the heat emanating from your skin through a down blanket. Luckily I had the forethought yesterday to pull the straps down on my bathing suit, or else I would have heinous tan lines that would totally ruin all of my tube top-rooted outfits from here on out.

We meet for breakfast at the same restaurant where we had dinner the night before and I must admit I am thrilled to see it is a buffet. I have a little white trash mixed up with my Italian/Irish heritage and lord knows I love the haphazard way in which buffets somehow result in a mishmash of shrimp quesadillas, waffles, and ham canapés on your plate. My cactus juice with parsley is not gnarly like I thought it would be – it’s sweet and citrusy with a little bit of herby crispness.

Our group sets off for Xcaret, a town about an hour and a half away from Cancun, where we’ve been told there’s an amazing National Park with an underground river you can float down. I’m not really all “back to nature” but I love water – I should have been a mermaid – so this sounds just rustic and outdoorsy enough for me.

It turns out that the park is really best described as a combination of the zoo meets Yellowstone meets Wet & Wild – everything on the land is protected, including the animals (turtles, toucans, flamingos, etc.). We’re forbidden from bringing any food of our own inside and aren’t allowed to bring in suntan lotion either – the chemicals and oils in most sunscreen are harmful to the animals in the sea, or something, so we’re supposed to use the “natural sunscreen” they sell inside.

First of all, Xcaret is gorgeous. It’s this massive space filled with beaches, natural swimming pools, animals, rivers, hammocks, palapas, and palms trees. Most of the tourists and visitors are from other parts of Mexico, which is a relief to me, because I’m always annoyed by my fellow Americans when I’m in foreign countries. But luckily there was nary a fanny pack in sight.

Second of all, natural sunscreen is terrible – apparently it lacks the oils and chemicals necessary to make it seep into your skin so that it doesn’t slide off the second you hit water. The minute I dove into the underground river (more on that in a second) I noticed my legs looked like I had just taken a bath in half and half, which is doubly gross because I really hate milk.

So the underground river is basically exactly what it sounds like – the slightly-cold water currents slowly pull you from one end of the park to the other through a series of natural caves. You can snorkel while you float if you want, but I don’t recommend paying for that since I didn’t see one fish worth looking at the entire ride. I do, however, recommend using all of the straps on your life vest – including the two that go in between your crotch and snap in above your butt. All of the people in my group resisted this at first – at some point every single one of us said “thong”, “wedgie”, and/or “camel toe” at the very thought – but once we were in the water and physics forced the top of the life vest up around our ears, we realized we had to strap in completely. How delightful it was to discover that these added straps created more of a seat to settle in that made floating easier, rather than some sort of codpiece. Just be careful not to accidentally criss-cross the straps between your legs. Charity did that and her squeals and screams could be heard all the way back in Cancun. The light that peeps in from various points in the cave’s ceiling creates a sun-sparkling glow against the river’s floor. It’s beautiful and relaxing.

After we floated to the end of the river, we meandered our way over to one of the sets of deck chairs overlooking a natural swimming pool filled with water from the Gulf. Everyone else in our group is sun-kissed as opposed to sun-fried so Miguel and I settle into some chairs in the shade while the others continue to bake. We buy some gigantic alcohol and fruit filled pineapple drinks with faces on them. Only in Mexico could an adult get away with drinking such a moronic beverage. I love it here. After a few hours of bliss we head back to Cancun.

Before dinner tonight we were sitting around in the lobby when I saw a dog climbing up the stairs from the beach. I am a dog-enthusiast so I go off running as best I can in my three-inch heels, desperate to pet the little bugger. My own dog, Lucca, is at home while Miguel and I are in Cancun and I miss her. This dog, it seems, is homeless, with no tags – she swam up to one of the hotel’s guests on the beach and he brought her in so she would be safe. I start crying because I instantly want to take the little pup upstairs (she’s a yellow lab mutt and judging by her size can only be about 9 months) but Miguel won’t let me, reminding me that we can’t bring Cuban cigars back into America, let alone homeless dogs. The hotel manager assures me they’ll take the dog to a nice facility that doesn’t kill or eat strays, but I have a hard time believing him. Earlier in the day, Carla had explained how she stopped eating meat after she got her pet Chihuahua – every time she ordered a steak after that, she saw her little puppy sitting on the plate. I’m starting to feel the same and may just walk out of this trip a 30SPF-Minimum Vegetarian. Damn you Mexico, what have you done to me?

Dinner is at Alfredo’s, an Italian mini-chain that swears on a stack of Bibles that its founder is the original creator of Fettuccine Alfredo. All of us have a really hard time believing that – certainly alfredo sauce has been around longer than 60 years right? I mean, these people date back to the Romans and a cream-based sauce is hardly rocket science. Nevertheless, they insist on this point and serve up the famous dish as an appetizer. I order the fish for a main course in a desire to be a little healthier and because my only other option is beef – need I remind you that I have been a vegetarian for an hour? My fish, sadly, is overly fried, which shouldn’t be a shocker. This is Mexico. I want tacos, not the Olive Garden. I fill up on wine like a good Italian girl.

Undoubtedly there’s some gang of gold draped goombahs sitting behind you on JetBlue (which just started flying direct to Cancun from a lot of major US cities) who busy themselves calling the stewardess “sweetheart” and frequently howl, “yo buddy, keep it steady!” to the pilot every time the plane hits a little turbulence.

Then, when the plane finally lands in Mexico’s Spring Break capital, they cheer and start ranting about how they’re going to get so “faced” on tequila the second they get off the plane. I am already amazed that any woman would ever have sexual relations with these greasy animals–and, in fact, that Spring Break is usually all about guys like these getting laid by their female counterparts. Thank GOD it is June and there shouldn’t be as many of these hellions around to ruin what I hope is going to be a classy, relaxing, tranquil introduction to Cancun–where I will sip my tequila-drowned margaritas rather than chug.

My boyfriend (who I will call Miguel for the purpose of this story–because we are in Mexico and “Miguel Sanchez” is his drunk-on-tequila-evil-alter-ego) and I are staying at the Presidente Intercontinental, one of the top resorts in Cancun. After Hurricane Wilma decimated the destination, the whole city came together to rejuvenate, knowing their tourism industry was the key to their economic stability–and the Presidente Intercontinental is one of the properties that did a major renovation after the Hurricane. Smack dab on THE most beautiful beach in Cancun, our room has an amazing view of the water, in front of which sits picturesque cabanas, palapas, and beach chairs. A little further back is the hotel’s pool which basks in full sun, all day long. As if I needed a reminder than my main goal for this trip is turn the color of adobe.

Our room is pretty dope. The floor is grey granite with no pesky rugs to distract from the cool feeling on your feet after a long day on the hot sand. The room is decorated really simply, which my OCD-ness really appreciates – I hate a cluttered, tacky hotel. When I’m on vacation, I like my hotel room to give me an overwhelming insecurity about my own home–I want it to possess all the serenity I’m convinced my apartment lacks. The only thing this room really needs is a deep bathtub with Jacuzzi jets, but this I’ll forgive. We’ve got a few hours before we’re due for drinks at the hotel’s tequila bar, so Miguel and I throw on our swimsuits–mine is from the Proenza Schuler Target line and I soon realize that my other bathing suit is also from Target, as are two of my dresses. I’m momentarily embarrassed. We hit Cana Brava, the hotel’s casual beachside eatery for fajitas and pina coladas. Miguel only drinks fruity bev’s in tropical destinations and he does so, with total abandon, the rest of our trip. Then we retire to one of the palapas on the sand to get some sun and go for a swim.

As I mentioned before, I have a goal to get tan on this trip but that statement is sort of misleading, as that’s one of my primary goals in life, not just on vacation. I’m pretty fair-skinned, but I’ve lived life with an 8-SPF-Max, Melanoma-be-damned motto–and on this first day out in the hot tropical sun, I’ve convinced myself that going totally SPF-less is a-okay. “I have a base tan!” I thought to myself as I tossed the $15 suntan lotion back on the shelf at the hotel’s gift shop. So after sitting outside, reading my book (The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory–read it, love it) and going for a dip inside the crystal clear, aquamarine blue Gulf waters with Miguel (who thinks it’s funny to dunk me under water to the point of near drowning), two hours have passed. I look over at Miguel, whose shoulders are starting to look a lovely shade of coral. I look down at my chest and see Crayola hot pink. It’s definitely time to get out of the sun.

After a shower and change we meet our travel companions downstairs for drinks at the hotel’s tequila bar. I try every flavor of margarita, all of which are delicious, though the mango is definitely my favorite, and the strawberry tastes a wee bit like a melted, icy Jolly Rancher. We eat dinner under the frond covered roof of El Caribeno–the best tortilla soup I’ve ever had–and Megan and I bore the rest of the group to tears with our heated, passionate discussion about the Showtime series The Tudors (clearly, this, combined with my book o’ choice, show what a total royalty-obsessed geek I am). To sum it up – Is Jonathan Rhys-Meyers too fey to play King Henry VIII? Yes. But is he still totally sexy? Like, duh. I guzzle a few more glasses of white wine and then Miguel and I retire up to our room to sleep.

For the record, the beds at the Presidente Intercontinental are ridiculously comfy–the pillows literally feel like marshmallows and I want to eat them. I hate my bed at home. Nice work Presidente, nice work.

Let’s go to Cancun!” twenty years ago you might have gotten some strange looks! Only in the early ’70s did hotels and lodgings begin to flourish into the Mexican city that people now dream of visiting. But dream no more, my dears! We are on our way!

Located on the northeast point of the Yucatan peninsula, Cancun is simply the perfect beach getaway. Temperatures average in the 80’s and they average over 240 days of sunshine! The beaches have fine white coral sand and crystal waters that are just meant for swimming, snorkelling and SCUBA diving.

Cancun has numerous restaurants where you can find menus from all over the world. There are over 200 eateries (at last count) and prices for meals can range from about $4.95 on up to or above $13.50. Cancun is also home to the largest water purification system in Mexico so the water is safe to drink in the hotels.

The city of Chichen Itza is one of the most visited destinations on the Yucatan peninsula. It’s about a three-hour drive from Cancun, so you’ll want to make it a full day trip. The city was built sometime between the fifth and thirteenth centuries and was built to show beautiful displays of light and shadow on the days of equinox. The main building is called Kukulcan and resembles “a golden serpent slithering down the front stairs of the building”

Cancun has ample beaches making water sports widely available. If snorkeling tickles your fancy the reefs between Cancun and Isla Mujeres have the widest array of wildlife. It is only accessible by boat, but tours on air-conditioned boats run for about $45 per person. Maybe you’re interested in jet skiing! Many of the marinas will rent wave runners and jet skis. Prices vary and negotiating is recommended. (If you threaten to leave you may get a better deal.)

If you happen to decide to take your trip in February you can catch the Carnival celebrations! These festivities are to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Merida, Cozumel, Campeche, and Isla Mujeres all host parades with many colorful floats, sporting events and costume balls. In Chetumal, there is a large-scale parade with floats, music and various folk dances from all over the region.

There is ample gay life in this tropical land.

BAR PICANTE

This is the oldest and most cruisy gay establishment in town. It’s a small video bar/cantina with a tiny dance floor that features occasional drag shows and stripper revues. But the main attraction of this place is the all-male clientele of good-looking, macho men. They are EVERYWHERE — and they are not shy. Some are working boys, so you might want to bring a little extra cash if you want to play around.

CLUB BACKSTAGE

This is the newest, hippest gay dance club in CANCUN that attracts a young, energetic and somewhat eclectic crowd of men and women. The bar keeps the high-energy music pumping all night in this stylish, modern dance hall that resembles a classy cabaret. The club also has some of the cutest waiters in town and some good drink specials on weekdays.

LA HATCH

This is a colorful little coffee-and-beer joint that is located directly in front of CLUB BACKSTAGE and is open in the early evening before the other gay bars open. With tables out front on the busy pedestrian walkway that connects Avenida Tulum with Palapas Park, this quaint spot is an excellent place to gather and gab before the other bars get busy.

MA’AX’O

Every Friday is RAINBOW PARTY NIGHT at this sophisticated, high-tech disco located in the new shopping center La Isla. The dance music is great, the waiters are friendly, and the STRIPPER SHOWS are hot, hot, hot!! It’s a fabulously fun addition to the gay scene in CANCUN.

Risky Times

For those who like a walk on the wild side, this place is a dark, mixed (gay/straight, men/women) dance club famous for its rowdy, risky afterhours scene. It gets hopping around 4 a.m. every night (mostly filled with the employees from the bars, hotels and restaurants of CANCUN) and doesn’t stop the music until sunrise. DEFINITELY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

For those who like the outdoors hunt and chase, try PLAYA DELFINES on the southern end of the Hotel Zone where the men hang out in the late afternoon, or PALAPAS PARK one block to the west of Tulum Avenida in downtown CANCUN where heavy cruising takes place in the evenings. If you are looking for some gay action in a remote location, PLAYA DEL CARMEN is a liberal, bohemian village about 60 miles south of CANCUN where you can find one out-and-proud little dance club called 69 and several other gay-friendly bars and clubs.

Its proximity to the United States and friendly and welcoming people combine with a rich culture, great shopping and fabulous food to offer something for everyone. Added to the mix is a thriving and diverse gay community, with pride parades marching all over the country, publications specifically targeting the community, travel options by and for gays and lesbians, and a string of cosmopolitan cities where the options for fun are endless.

Sun, Fun, and Blue Chairs? Mexico has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and thousands of gays wash ashore to enjoy their crystal blue waters and white sands. The top gay beach is Cancun’s Playa del Rey (also know as Playa Delfines) beach for boys and girls.

Cancun
The beach and related water sports activities are the prime activities here. Local gays used to recommend the Mirador, a beautiful rocky area with a little lighthouse behind the Camino Real Hotel in the elbow of the island Hotel Zone.

But the new gathering spot is Playa Delfines, a gorgeous stretch of white sand at the southern end of the Hotel Zone, next to the Ceasar Park Hotel and across from the Ruinas del Rey. People-watching is also a prime activity, especially in the downtown area. Shoppers will love the wonderful selection of air-conditioned malls and street bargain centers. And bullfights, for those who can stand them, happen every Wednesday at the fairly new Plaza de Toros. Cancun is an excellent starting off point for many day trips or short excursions in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for gay travelers, and Cancun is designed to be the ultimate tourist destination in Mexico. The result is a very tourist friendly, gay friendly atmosphere with excellent public transportation, friendly people, and luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Unlike other cities, Cancun has a modern water purification system, so most of the tap water is drinkable for visitors.

Cancun’s Zona Hotelera is the strip of resorts and hotels created specifically for tourists. In this area, you will find American chain restaurants, shops and amazing beaches. El Centro is the downtown area, a bit less touristy and more local. Here there are great local restaurants and eateries, and a variety of nightclubs, both gay and straight.

Of course, while in Cancun you won’t want to miss a trip to the Mayan ruins at Ruinas del Rey and Yamil Lu’um, both in the Zona Hotelera. But whatever you do while in Cancun, you are sure to have an amazing tropical vacation.

Beaches

Cancun offers the beautiful strips of white sand beaches that most people think of when they imagine the Yucatan coast. Many of the beaches have rough waves and are not safe to swim in, but are great for sunbathing and other water sports.

Though the water is generally to treacherous to swim in, Playa Delfines (Boulevard Kukulcán km 20) is a popular place with gay tourists. The white sands are perfect for sunning, the water is many shades of blue and the view is incredible. This beach is also popular for surfing, and a great place for taking lessons. Like many beaches in Cancun, the scene at Playa Chac Mool (Blvd. Kukulcan) changes depending on the time of day. During the day, many local families flock here to swim in the relatively calm waves. But in the afternoon, the rocky areas becomes a bit cruisey. Parque de las Palapas in El Centro is another outdoor location known for its cruisey-ness. Playa Langosta (Boulevard Kukulcán Km 5) is calm beach that is popular with families and partiers alike. It is a relaxing beach for sunbathing and swimming in the gentle waters. There is a dock in the middle, but the swimming area is clearly designated.
Events

For three solid weeks at the end of January, the streets of Cancun are filled with parties, shows, dancing and exhibitions. It’s Carnival! And it is not to be missed. People gather from all over to take part in the 24-hour street party. Each May, ARCO IRIS (800-765-4370 or 619-297-0897, gaymexicoexperts@aol.com) hosts the International Gay Festival, a four day celebration of hedonism and homos, that includes tours, cruises, and tons of parties. ARCO IRIS also hosts the Mayan Riviera Gay Fall Festival in November, highlighted by the Fall Fiesta Grand Party complete with strippers and drag queens. These events are too hot to be missed!

Nightlife

Clubs come and go quickly in Cancun, but there are a couple long-lasting gay clubs and many of the straight clubs are gay-friendly. Nightlife in Cancun doesn’t really get started until 10pm or later, and lasts until 5 in the morning. Looking for addresses in Cancun can be tricky, but the cab drivers know most of clubs by name. Buses run frequently between El Centro and Zona Hotelera and El Centro is walkable.

Every night seems like a party at Cancun’s oldest gay bar, Picante (Plaza Gallerias, Av. Tulum 20), but for holidays Picante throws wild parties complete with costumes and elaborate performances that reflect the culture of Mexico. Picante has great drink specials, drag shows and strippers. Thursday is Tequila night with free shots. Nearby at Karamba (Av. Tulum 11), the largest disco in Cancun, the fun really gets going after midnight when the locals show up. Karamba offers great drink specials, drag shows, and karaoke. You’ll also find male strippers here on the weekends.

Dining

Cancun offers a lot of great dining options for visitors, from street food to cuisine. One of the most beautiful (and expensive) restaurants is La Joya (Blvd. Kukulcan Km 9.5, +52 998-881-3200), located in the Fiesta Americana Hotel. Here you will find perfectly prepared traditional Mexican recipes. The catch of the day wrapped in maguey leaves is always a treat. Folklorico dancers and mariachi bands heighten the experience. For something even more authentic, head over to La Parrilla (Av. Yaxchilan 51, +52 998-887-6141) which bills itself as the most traditional restaurant in Cancun. They serve reliable Mexican recipes in an authentic folk atmosphere. Live mariachi music and an excellent assortment of tequilas provide the perfect finishing touches to the experience. Reservations are recommended. A visit to Cancun is not complete without a visit to Perico’s (Av. Yaxchilan 61, +52 998-884-3152). The food is not the highlight of this popular tourist trap, but the non-stop party is. Costumed waiters serving flaming drinks to the loud marimbe and mariachi music, and the whole restaurant jumping up to conga line together and drink tequila shots is really the draw.

For foodies looking for something with a twist, Labna (Av. Margaritas 29, +52 998-892-3056) serves Mayan-inspired food that is anything but run of the mill. Their gourmet traditional cuisine features fantastic dishes such as pork loin in sour orange sauce and Longaniza de Valladolid, a traditional Mexican sausage. For dessert, try the guava mousse. The menu here is well priced, and the wait staff are friendly and hospitable. Another excellent food bet is El Cejas (Avenida Xel-Ha, +52 998-887-1080), an open-air seafood restaurant in El Centro. Located inside the Mercado Veintiocho, El Cejas serves up amazingly fresh seafood. The shrimp ceviche is delicious, and they have a great hangover remedy called vuelva a la vida (return to life) made of conch, oysters, shrimp, octopus, calamari, and fish in a spicy tomato sauce.

Maybe you’ll want something besides Mexican food while in Cancun. In that case, try La Pasteleteria-Crepería (Av. Coba 7, Sm 25, +52 998-884-3420). With a variety of soups, sandwiches, crepes and pizza, this is a delightful little spot for a mid-day meal. A delicious assortment of pastries are baked on-site. For a healthy, organic meal, check out the aptly-named 100% Natural (Av. Sunyaxchen 62, +52 998-887-1000). This popular chain of restaurants (there is also one in the Zona Hotelera) serves a wonderful array of light, healthy and vegetarian dishes. The menu is broad and diverse, and also offers egg, chicken and fish dishes. 100% Natural is also a great place for fresh fruit drinks.
