In 2004 Ortíz opened Glow, the newest and largest gay dance club—just around the corner from Karamba. This darkly lit, two-level dance club spins high-energy electronica every weekend, with accompanying laser lights (and, if you’re lucky, a drag or stripper show). The cover on Friday is about $6.

A bit further down Avenida Tulum is Picante, a much smaller bar with a tiny dance floor. Many locals look down on it as tacky and cheap, and populated with a less-than-classy crowd. One local, Manuel, put it this way: “It’s not the nicest bar, but it’s a great place to go at the very end of the night. You’ve got every kind of person there: men, women, gay, supposedly straight, transvestites, and drag queens. It can be a lot of fun.”

Some local gays go to large mainstream clubs as well. These include Basic, a bizarre white blob of a building that floats above the lagoon in the Zona Hotelera, and Pop, located downtown, which plays dance music and also hosts live music. Just a few steps away from Glow, Roots Jazz Club is a small mainstream venue that serves Caribbean cuisine and hosts live music and art shows.

Like everyone else, gay life suffered from Hurricane Wilma. “Wilma was a terrifying experience,” Ortíz recalls. “Karamba disappeared completely, and it was a very hard blow to overcome, since we didn’t have insurance and we had to put our own money into rebuilding it. Luckily nothing happened to Glow, so we could [devote] eight months to remodeling at Karamba. Now we are trying to return to the level of visitors that we had in Karamba before the hurricane, but we realize that it may take a couple more years.”

In addition to more business, Ortíz is also hoping for greater rights for gay people in Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is located. “Now there is a bit more openness and respect for homosexuals,” he says, “not only here in Quintana Roo but all over Mexico, since two states of the republic have authorized the Ley de Sociedad de Convivencia, which in reality is the right to marry your partner and obtain the same benefits as any heterosexual couple. We hope that by the end of this year this law will be accepted in the state of Quintana Roo.”

Civil unions between gays have been legalized in the northern border state of Coahuila and Mexico City. The states of Veracruz and Michoacan are on the verge of passing the same measures just like Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Guerrero.

Mexico City. As Mexico’s largest city (and in fact, Mexico City is even larger than New York City), Mexico City has a large gay and lesbian community and has even legalized same sex civil unions. Mexico City offers a lot of gay nightlife and culture, with many gay clubs, including a few dozen in the Zona Rosa alone. There are gay theater groups and an annual Gay Pride Parade.

Guadalajara. Mexico’s second city also has a large gay and lesbian population and is a great place for gay tourists to visit. Cultural amenities here include a popular gay radio show, a gay cultural center and a more atmosphere about homosexuality than seen in many other Mexican cities. Guadalajara has a particularly large lesbian population.

There is a long list of gay bars and clubs. But here is just a couple. The Angel’s bar that plays electronica. Monica’s Disco plays Latin rhythm disco. To locate other clubs and bars for a bit of nightlife look for La Guia Rosa or Zona Gay.

Cancun has many things other larger Mexican cities don’t: gay-owned beachfront hotels, gay beaches (namely Playa Delfines at southern end of the Hotel Zone), a hopping queer nightclub scene, and two major gay and lesbian party events. The Cancun International Gay Festival in May and the Cancun Mayan Riviera Gay Fall Festival in November have booming beach parties along with raves in the downtown LGBT clubs.

Criticized by some as concrete, soulless, and far from the real Mexico, touristy Cancun can nevertheless offer a fun- and sun-filled vacation, with 14 miles of perfect beaches and luxury mega-hotels. It’s Mexico made easy: English is widely spoken, roads are well-paved, the city feels clean and manicured, and familiar brand names are prevalent for dining, shopping, and nightclubbing. And the real Mexico—especially the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum—is just a short day trip away.

Cancun, as that sandbar’s also known, has by now become a household name in much of this hemisphere and beyond for a variety of reasons – foremost, of course, is its swell expanse of beach. Though it once seemed all too possible the place would end up subsumed in a kind of trashy, spring-breakish vibe, those who have not been down here in a while will be in for a pleasant surprise.

There’s still plenty of cheese to go around, with parts of the touristy Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) coming across almost like Vegas on the beach, especially when it comes to the go-go nightlife. These days, however, that’s balanced by a world-class menu of new and upscale resorts, shopping centers, spas and dining. “Get away from it all,” if you like, by bopping down the coast a bit or to several quieter offshore islands like Isla Mujeres. Meanwhile, for a taste of a less touristy Mexican town, all you need to do is head west over to the real downtown Cancun, with its bullring, its local-frequented cantinas and its funky-yet-safe vibe.

As always, what makes the Cancun experience especially magical is the final dimension: The chance to mix sun ‘n’ fun with some of the most incredible and inspiring sights on the planet — not just the natural cenotes (sinkholes), mangrove forests, and other eco-offerings of the Yucatan peninsula, but also the area’s incredible wealth of pre-colonial history in the form of the dramatic ruins of ancient Mayan cities rising out of the jungle. This stuff is downright legendary. In other words, this isn’t the McCaribbean you’re used to.

We set our sights on the resort area of Cancun, Mexico, a narrow strip of white beach balanced precariously between a lagoon and the ocean.

Four decades ago, only three people occupied this skinny corridor in what was then a forgotten corner of the Caribbean. Now it is home to nearly 150 hotels and 380 restaurants – making it a prime destination spot for travelers looking to throw back a quick shot of luxury and relaxation.

At the Gran Melia Cancun Resort and Spa, we found ourselves quickly in relaxation mode on the balcony of our luxurious hotel room as we watched the sun fall below the horizon. The ocean seemed to come right up to the hotel’s front step and our view included a lovely, beckoning pool area.

We were up early next morning, with books and suntan lotion in hand. First we loaded up on a buffet breakfast  picking from trays of salmon, pastries, local fruits and cheeses. With tummies full, all we wanted was to collapse on a towel on the pool deck.

But the desire to sleep away our long weekend faded quickly as we passed a shelf of colorful brochures in the hotel tourist office. Skimming over the array of offerings our curiosity was piqued.

We knew Cancun’s claim to fame was its resorts. We didn’t know there was much to discover beyond fancy hotels and beach.

So we added to our plans a day of exploring. In a rental car  we did the hour drive to Xcaret, an ecological theme park that combines a network of underground rivers, animal displays and nearly a dozen restaurants, geared toward tourists looking to experience the fruits of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Floating through the underground network of rivers alone was worth the high price of admission (rates start at $69 per person; more if you add meals and snorkeling) but there are also enough activities, swimming holes, animals and cultural offerings to keep you engaged for a day.

Drive 40 minutes farther south and you are at the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum. The ruins are breathtaking, white rock backed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. But we had squeezed the two visits to Tulum and Xcaret together in one day, and did feel a little rushed.

Cancun itself provides all the modern conveniences of a resort community in the United States, including open-air malls, restaurants catering to tourists and high prices – more than we expected to pay in Mexico. Five-minute taxi rides can easily cost a fixed $10, admission into top clubs can reach $40 per person and dinner for two is easily $60, at a casual place.

But once you reach the shoulder of the Cancun resort arm, the area seems more like a Mexican community, with crowded markets, high-traffic streets and colorful stores. For those who want to peek behind the curtain of luxury to see what Mexico is really like, here’s your chance.

In Cancun, we dined at a Mexican-theme restaurant, Paloma Bonita, a lively, family-friendly place that was also fun sans kids. Another night we retreated to the JW Marriott’s Gustino restaurant, to sample the top-end Italian fare – this place has received many accolades and they are deserved; the chic restaurant wouldn’t be out of place in Manhattan.

Our four-day trip to Cancun proved refreshing and relaxing, accented with a slight taste of adventure and a lot of luxury.
