Puerto Vallarta offers visitors a broad spectrum of authentic Mexican experiences, with a wide range of spectacular landscapes, fantastic food (and tequila, of course), and the chance to see some of the rarest animals on land and at sea.

As one of the most responsible, ecotourism locations in the world, doing more to protect and conserve its natural landscape than almost any other destination, Puerto Vallarta stands as a leading example for exotic escapes world-wide. From conservation programs for endangered species to organized eco-awareness days, both the local government and community are involved in taking care of one of the most beautiful areas on earth.

The area has made considerable efforts to protect many of the species that call Puerto Vallarta and its surrounding areas home. Puerto Vallarta is the birthplace of the Humpback Whale and every year, from December to April, humpback whales return to the area to breed. Visitors are offered the once in a lifetime chance to see the whales in their natural environment on a whale-watching excursion in the calm waters of the bay.

The nearby Sierra Madre Mountains are also the epicenter of numerous other ecological wonders, and guests to the area can experience the wildlife with the help of one of the highly educated eco-tour guides. Explore the forest floor, or get a view from above in a canopy tour.

One of Mexico’s most widely celebrated cultural expressions is grown and distilled in the state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located. This expression is Tequila, which in Puerto Vallarta is not just a drink, but a place as well. The town Tequila is just a short 35-minute flight form Puerto Vallarta and well worth a visit. The blue-green agave plants carpet the region and make the area the only place in the world where authentic tequila is distilled.

When encountering tequila in its rightful birthplace, it would seem absurd to not experience the spirit alongside truly authentic and regional Mexican fare. Some of Mexico’s top chefs call Puerto Vallarta home, where, in November of every year, the annual International Gourmet Festival is held. During this ten-day celebration, senses feast on the culinary masterpieces of 20 guest chefs, among them some of the finest in the world. Whether you are visiting one of their many internationally acclaimed restaurants serving exceptionally fine cuisine, or stopping at a small, family-run taco stand for lunch, your palate will not be disappointed.

Puerto Vallarta has been long celebrated as a relaxing escape or an exciting destination for your family to experience unparalleled natural landscapes. Celebrities have flocked to it and made their homes there, drawn to the beautiful scenery and traditional architecture. Whether you are looking for an exotic vacation from the everyday or the trip of a lifetime for you and your family, Puerto Vallarta will not let you down and will having you returning year after year.

There are some 90-100 miles of sensational coastline (and an estimated 30-40 miles of sandy beaches) on Banderas Bay, the largest natural bay in Mexico and the seventh largest in the world. Along much of the central area (Puerto Vallarta) and northern parts of the Bay (Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, La Cruz and Punta de Mita), you can find beaches that often stretch for miles. To add to the pleasure of these beaches, from November to March a siting of whales or schools of dolphins is not unusual. Swimming, parasailing, surfing, fishing, boogie-boarding, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving are popular outdoor activities in the Banderas Bay area. Here listed below are many of the beaches around the bay, starting with Vallarta and traveling south.

Vallarta Beaches

Playa El Salado is the beach in the Marina District at the very northern end of Puerto Vallarta where one finds some of the town’s largest and newest hotels including Marriott, Mayan Palace, Melia, Velas Vallarta and the Westin Regina Resort.

Playa de Oro extends from the Marina Terminal to the Pitillal River in the North Hotel Zone in front of the Crown Paradise, Hacienda Buenaventura and Krystal Vallarta hotels.

Playa Las Palmas, Playa Los Tules, Playa Las Glorias and Playa Camarones run nearly continuously for over two miles from the Pitillal River to just north of the downtown malecon. Many of these beaches are accessed by going through or around the main hotels in the area such as Holiday Inn, Villa del Palmar, Qualton, Los Tules, Plaza Las Glorias, Continental Plaza and the Sheraton, one of the largest hotel complexes in Latin America. These beaches together comprise the longest stretch of beach in town and some areas are popular.

Playa Dorada is the beach downtown running the length of the malecon. It is not frequented much as the waves here can be rather strong and the beach tends to be stony. Locals go to Playa de Los Muertos.

Playa de Los Muertos - For many years Puerto Vallarta’s principal beach has been known as Playa de Los Muertos, the beach of the dead. How it got this name is not really known: some say that a cemetery was located in the area; others say that there were battles at one time among pirates or between pirates and the men who came down from the mountains with their loads of gold and silver to be shipped back to Spain. Whatever the case may be, it makes for a good story, and the name has stuck. Los Muertos/Playa del Sol is a mile long stretch of a wide sandy beach bordered by the Cuale River to the north and Conchas Chinas on the south end. There are a good number of restaurants and drinking holes on the beach, where the clientele sit under the many round, thatched palapas or beach umbrellas for shade and order food and drinks. Los Muertos is the beach for all South Side accommodations, and the Blue and Green Chairs of the gay beach are located near the southern end.

Along Los Muertos beach are some of the most popular beach-front restaurants in Vallarta such as La Palapa, El Dorado, Daiquiri Dick’s and Coco Tropical, as well as hangouts like Oasis beach bar and Burros bar. The pier at Los Muertos is where many people board the daily cruise ships bound for the South Shore villages of Las Animas, Quimixto or Yelapa (these villages are accessible only by boat; see below). Water taxis from the pier can also take you directly to these destinations. You might want to charter a small boat (known as a “panga”) for a private tour or even arrange a fishing expedition at the pier.

one of the beaches in conchas chinas puerto vallartaPlaya Conchas Chinas - At the south end of Los Muertos Beach is a large rocky outcropping. There is a narrow path that leads up and over. This is the beginning of Conchas Chinas beach, which is not really one beach but several lovely small, sandy coves (photo at left) among a series of these rocky outcroppings. If you are looking for a more private beach experience, you may find it in Conchas Chinas. The waters are clear and shore fishing, swimming and small beach gatherings are popular. Beach areas are accessible off Highway 200 which runs a block or two up from the coast. There are no beachfront restaurants as one finds at many of the other beaches in town, so bring your own food and drink for a picnic on the beach. The hillsides overlooking the Conchas Chinas beaches have become crowded with luxury condos and villas, which often have spectacular views.

South Shore Beaches

South of Puerto Vallarta, beaches are shorter stretches of sandy areas among a generally rocky coastline. The Dreams Vallarta hotel (formerly Camino Real) on the south end of the Conchas Chinas residential area has its own beach, Las Estacas. A mile south at Km 3.5 on Highway 200 is the Playa Los Venados, a beach a few hundred yards in length, similar to the beaches that follow at Playa El Carrizo, Punta Negra, Garza Blanca and Playa Gemelas. These are all sandy beaches with moderate waves and currents. Playa Los Arcos is a relatively short stretch of sand near the famous rock formations known as Los Arcos, The Arches, where the waves have worn away the rock and there are arches or passageways through the small islands in this natural preserve.

Mismaloya Beach - It was here in the small village of Mismaloya, approximately 10 miles south of Vallarta, that the movie “The Night of the Iguana” was filmed by John Huston in 1963. A part of the original set is still in existence, and if one knows the movie, walking onto the set can be an experience. Nearby is a restaurant named in its honor, with views of Banderas bay. The small beach at Mismaloya has several restaurants and there are boats for rent for a trip to the rock formations at Los Arcos (photos below) or nearby beaches. The movies Predator (1987) and Gunmen (1994) were also filmed near Mismaloya at El Eden. Horses are available for jungle rides, and trips up the Mismaloya River to the restaurants Chino’s Paradise or El Eden are popular. Photos of Mismaloya below

The following beaches and villages along the South Shore are accessible only by taking one of the day cruise boats or you can get to these beaches by taking a water taxi from Mismaloya or the small village of Boca de Tomatlan, which is just beyond Mismaloya.

Playa Las Animas – This tranquil beach of several hundred meters long is very quiet, so you can easily relax, get a tan, do some swimming and have some good food at one of several beach front restaurants. The lovely beach is bordered by rocky promontories at either end. Located about 20 minutes from Boca by boat, there are no overnight accommodations here as far as I know. National Geographic’s write up on Las Animas here

Quimixto – A small village on the South Shore past Las Animas. Many of the day cruises drop anchor here for several hours so that their passengers can horseback ride up to the popular waterfall in the mountains. Several palapa roofed restaurants line the cove in Quimixto. If you want a quiet and still undeveloped area for relaxing and taking in some of the natural beauty of the Bay, try this getaway for an afternoon. You can spend some time at the beach or one go on a ride up to the waterfall.

Yelapa – Yelapa is the most remote fishing village on the South Shores, also accessible only by boat. It’s popular because of its beauty and the slow pace of life, and has been known as something of an artist retreat and hippie hangout. Several day cruises stop there for a few hours and like Quimixto there is a river and popular waterfall. Yelapa is very laid back and has real charm, with palapas and seafood restaurants on the beach and small bungalows and houses that dot the jungle hillsides. There are no cars. Electricity has only recently made its way to the village, which used to go dark around 10pm after everyone turned off their generators. Lodging is still reasonably priced. There are water taxis from Vallarta and Mismaloya direct to Yelapa that run in the morning and afternoon.

North Shore Beaches

Bucerias - Bucerias is a village of several thousand people located 15 miles north of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit and has five to six miles of uninterrupted shoreline, the longest stretch of beach on the Bay. Bucerias is more laid back than Vallarta and has a small expatriate community. Pleasant accommodations with moderate prices are on or near the water, and the town is popular with many Canadian tourists because of its more economic prices for food and lodging. Bucerias’ architecture is noted for cupolas (domes) and there are hundreds of them on buildings throughout the town. Open air palapa roofed restaurants serve fresh seafood and the uncrowded beaches have gentle surf.

Pacific Coast Beaches

Sayulita – Twenty miles beyond Bucerias, but on the Pacific coast, is a favorite gringo getaway, the small picturesque village of Sayulita with its two thousand or so inhabitants. Surfers like it because the cove there gives good waves pretty much the whole year (the best waves are Nov-Apr), and it is the favorite surf spot in the Banderas Bay area. Several of Mexico’s finest (and handsomest) surfers live and surf here, and one can take lessons or rent boards on the beach; long board and short board are both popular. There are pleasant beach front restaurants, including the upscale Don Pedro’s and the popular Capitan Pablo’s, as well as bungalows, villas, guest houses and camp grounds.

The dusty streets of the town converge on the small town square, which has several restaurants, an ice cream shop and grocery store, the Choco Banana coffee shop, the church and town billiard hall, a row of houses and a bar or two facing it. This is the look of hundreds of small villages in Mexico. As Janelle Brown reported in the NY Times in 2003, the town still “retains its traditional lifestyle: residents buy fish off the beach, chicken from the woman in the square, and everything else (mops, strainers, plastic chairs) from the trucks that occasionally drive around town.” The town is being rather rapidly developed, alas. Still, the Sayulita beach is long and lovely and is one of my favorite getaways.

For years Puerto Vallarta’s gay beach has been known as the Blue Chairs, the popular beachfront bar and restaurant located near the southern end of Playa Los Muertos, the principal Vallarta beach. The gay beach also includes a good portion of the Green Chairs next door at Ritmos Beach Cafe restaurant. The clientele at both places sit under the many round, thatched palapas for shade or lay out on their towels to soak up the tropical heat and Mexico sun. On any day of the winter high season, there are several hundred gay men sunning, talking, eating, drinking, cruising and playing in the water. The surf can be rough at times, especially during the winter months, so be careful getting in and out. To add to the pleasure of these gay-friendly beaches, from which nearly all of Banderas Bay is visible, starting in November until late March a sighting of whales or schools of dolphins is not unusual. So keep an eye out…

The size of gay beach area (now gay beaches to be more exact) has expanded due to the recently opened Blue Seas resort and beachfront restaurant in this part of Los Muertos beach, practically adjacent to the traditional Blue and Green chairs. The Bite Me! beach club offers beachfront chaise lounges and recliners with sun shades, an air conditioned bar and lounge, as well as an open-air dining area for its gay friendly crowd. Additionally, the gay-owned Beach House next door to the El Dorado restaurant is becoming popular, has a mixed crowd and tends to be a quieter spot.

David Kirby in a relatively recent New York Times vacation article on gay Puerto Vallarta noted that the crowds on holiday at the beach were friendly, “mostly over 30, and mostly from the Midwest or West Coast. For a gay beach scene, it was pretty low key. Many there said they go back to Puerto Vallarta every year, not only for the gay scene but also the relaxed atmosphere and gorgeous natural surroundings.” Adding to that, Puerto Vallarta perhaps compares pretty well with the beach and nightlife scenes in other popular gay beach vacation resorts such as Fort Lauderdale, Rehoboth, South Beach and maybe even Provincetown, relatively speaking.

Local vendors will approach you at the beach with a wide variety of goods: quality silver from the mines in Taxco Mexico, brightly colored mexican blankets, lace tablecloths, clothing, hand carved masks, basket work and fresh baked pies and muffins, to name a few items. You can eat, cruise, party, sun, shop and chat at the same time – talk about a tropical paradise! What a great way to spend your holidays. Good buys can be had, particularly if you know how to bargain. Vendors will often ask more than what they are willing to settle for. If you aren’t interested, a simple ‘no, gracias’ will send these friendly vendors on their way.

Gay men on vacation holiday and at the beach in Puerto Vallarta tend to be more relaxed and open than they are at the gay bars, so use this opportunity to make new friends. If you are into Mexican men, there are some good looking ones around. Sunday is their one full day off work and many of them spend it at the Blue and Green chairs, usually with a group of friends. There are also a number of hustlers on the make at the beach and in town; if you take one of them home, be aware of what you are getting into and also take care to keep track of your valuables.

The Blue and Green chairs in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is an extremely popular gay beach destination and is not to be missed. The gay beach party often lasts from late morning until around sunset.

How to Get to the Gay Beach

If you have accommodations on the South Side of Puerto Vallarta it is pretty much a short walk to the Blue and Green chairs of the gay beach, which is some 200-300 yards south of the pier on playa Los Muertos beach. From the hotel zone on the north side of town, it’s a 15-20 minute taxi ride or so, which may cost 50-75 pesos or more. Just ask the taxi driver to take you to the Blue Chairs beach or the Blue Chairs hotel resort on Los Muertos. If you take any bus marked “Olas Altas” on the windshield, get off at the end of the line when the bus makes the turn around at the Lazaro Cardenas Park. You are then within a short 9-12 minute walking distance. Coming from Conchas Chinas or other South Shore accommodations, it’s definitely easier to take the taxi because the buses don’t run that frequently.

The two weeks of Christmas/New Year are the most popular time to be here (Thanksgiving week is the second most popular gay beach holiday time in Vallarta). Many men return year after year and know each other, so the feeling of camaraderie in town is particularly strong and it’s a period of many fun parties and reunions.

At the southern end of Playa Los Muertos beach is a large rocky outcropping. There is a narrow path that leads up and over. The area around there was once more noted for its gay cruising, especially around sunset, and is still popular with some. This is the beginning of Conchas Chinas beach, which is not really one but of several small, sandy coves or beaches (photo at left) among a series of these rocky outcroppings. If you are looking for a more private experience, you may find it in along the mile or two stretch of the Conchas Chinas coast. The waters are clear and shore-fishing, swimming and small gatherings of friends and families are popular. These beaches are accessible off coastal Highway 200 also known as the Highway to Mismaloya.

The hillsides overlooking the Conchas Chinas’ beaches have become populated with luxury condos and villas, which often offer spectacular views. It takes a good five-seven minute taxi ride up the winding hillside roads before you get to the top of the developments, but the reward is a view unsurpassed in all of Puerto Vallarta, with the entire 600 square miles of Banderas Bay stretching out before you. Some of the sunset bars in town have somewhat similar lovely panoramic views.

Unfortunately, the authorities in Puerto Vallarta and the State of Jalisco have not had the good sense to control the development in many parts of town and the surrounding area and so the charming Alta Vista, Amapas, Conchas Chinas and South Shores areas in particular are in danger of losing their appeal, and their palm trees, as more and more condos and villas go up along the hillsides and the beaches. It is well known that Banderas Bay has suffered for years from the stress of so many people using its resources, with problems ranging from over-fishing to agricultural runoff. Los Muertos beach though is still a lovely tropical beach destination and is the magnet pulling the gay clientele to the Blue and Green chairs and the South Side area.

Puerto Vallarta is more about quiet secluded beaches and ecotourism than Mexico’s other beach vacation destinations.

Banderas bay itself is approximately 34 miles in length containing 26 distinctly different beaches which cover nearly 80% of it’s shoreline.

Look for our Puerto Vallarta Mexico Vacation offers on our homepage!

The northern Puerto Vallarta beaches tend to be longer and wider than the beaches on the south of the bay.

This is due to the foothills of the Sierra Madre in Puerto Vallarta and south of Vallarta which are closer to the sea.

South of PV the mountains almost fall into the sea. Therefor there are many small coves and intimate secluded hidden beach spots. On Sundays many Mexicans take their families out to the beaches and have a real day of bask in the beauty of the Bay.

We will go over the principal Vallarta beaches starting within Puerto Vallarta and then move north towards Nayarit state.

For the beaches south of Vallarta up to Yelapa, see our page Yelapa beaches.

Los Muertos Puerto Vallarta Beach: Located in old town, 5 min from downtown. If you know Spanish, don’t be afraid. This Puerto Vallarta beach is actually the most visited. For those of you who don’t know Spanish, Playa los Muertos, means beach of the dead and actually refers to when the Spaniards entered the Bay of Banderas. A battle between neighboring tribes was under way and the concentration of fallen warriors was highest along this beach.

You can take a water taxi from there to the most remote Puerto Vallarta beach on the south end of the bay. Mainly frequented by Mexicans, but a lot of Americans and Canadians enjoy the beach because they are staying in the area. There are a large variety of beach front hotels, small hostels or other condo vacation rentals available in the area. If you’re hungry you can choose from great seafood restaurants like La Palapa and El Dorado or the typical fast-seafood places which are more affordable.

Hotel Zone Puerto Vallarta beach: There are several public access points to the hotel zone since it literally stretches for miles and some streets even come to an end right in front of the beach. This is where most tourists are everyday, you can do everything from parasailing to windsurfing, banana boating, jet skiing and more. You can enjoy great views of Old Town which is not even ten minutes away. The most used entrances are by the Krystal Hotel, the Sheraton Hotel and the Buenaventura.

Marina Vallarta Beach: Even though beaches in Mexico are public property, you may find it difficult to reach the beach if you’re not staying at one of the great hotels in the area.

Of course you can still find a way to the beach by asking security staff from a hotel. They’ll usually let you in, if your primary goal is to go to the beach and not use their facilities. Or you can go to a beachside bar like the Nikki Beach at the Westin Resort where you will find the best Sunday brunch buffet in town.

Boca de Tomates is a great beach if you are a fan of ecotourism. Crocodiles, sea turtles and exotic birds are what this Puerto Vallarta beach is known for. It is also a very popular beach among boogie boarders. Boca de Tomates is accessible by foot along the beach or by car at the turnoff between the airport and the bridge leading to nuevo vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta beach, Boca de Tomates

Nuevo Vallarta Beach is certainly the widest and longest Vallarta beach in the bay. Visitors and wonderful resort properties have grown so much in the past 10 years, that Nuevo Vallarta has taken on a whole new dimension. Most people staying/vacationing in a hotel in Nuevo Vallarta rarely venture downtown because they have everything they need at their fingertips; from a marina, to two a two-level shopping mall, tons of restaurants, watersports and one of the Bays greatest beaches. However, those looking for the more traditional Mexico experience still venture downtown in the evenings.

Bucerias, Nayarit Beach, is 25 min north of Puerto Vallarta. Miles of golden sandy beaches is what you will find here. There are numerous palapa and beach restaurants and is a great place for scuba diving. If you like shopping you will probably want to walk through the flea market in the town square.

Piedra Blanca beach. Location: 40 minutes north from Puerto Vallarta by public bus.

Piedra Blanca beach is separated into 2 sections by rocks as white as snow which is exactly where the name Piedra Blanca (white stone) comes from. The 1st section is only about 200 feet long and 80 feet wide.

The second section is longer at 300 feet in length and 60 feet in width. This section is home to the Piedra Blanca Hotel.

The finely textured white sand plus smooth waters of both ports give this beach the tranquility you are looking for and makes it a great location for diving and snorkeling

Destiladeras beach, located 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta by public bus, 30 minutes by car (pay parking lote available).

A favorite with many Vallartans especially families on Sundays, when they flock here to enjoy the wide white sand beach and fresh seafood at its outdoor palapa-shaded restaurants at the edge of the water. Alternately, the large flat rocks found here can be used as picnic tables.

Surfers appreciate its two- to five-foot swells, while others enjoy strolling its seemingly endless beach.

During the week you pretty much get the place to yourself as local Vallartans will mostly be working.

The timid and parents alike appreciate the gradual dropp-off of the coast: you can wade a long way out into the water before it even reaches your waist.

El Anclote, only minutes south of Punta de Mita, is a great beach spot to teach children how to surf and a favorite Puerto Vallarta beach for both locals and tourists. There are a number of shops for renting surf/boogie boards, snorkeling gear, and several great restaurants to dine in.

Punta de Mita, Nayarit beach, located 35 min. north of Puerto Vallarta, at the northernmost tip of Banderas Bay. Punta de Mita is quickly growing into the prime Real Estate location within the bay.

Two great beaches and seafood galore make this a must see. Make sure you have a chance to see it for yourself before Real Estate companies change the face of Punta de Mita forever.

Sayulita, Nayarit Beach: Sayulita Nayarit beach is without question the main surfing spot in Puerto Vallarta. Sayulita is a fishing village similar to Puerto Vallarta some decades ago. It is very popular among the American visitors, it takes less than 45 minutes to get there from the hotel zone. Great seafood can be found on the beach for all budgets. Many free spirits from Canada and the US have made Sayulita their home. If your heart still lives in the sixties you’ll love this quiet beach community.

San Francisco, “San Pancho”, Nayarit Beach: A very relaxing beach north of Puerto Vallarta where time seems to stand still. Two things you will notice more so than any other beach in the Puerto Vallarta area are the birds… and the silence.
In San Pancho you’ll find a huge beach near the mouth of a river. This is definitely a wild spot for ocean lovers with good waves and access to all of your favorite water sports. Thanks to the newly constructed highway the trip to this Nayarit beach is only about 45 minutes and is worth every step of the journey.

Nearly all of the Puerto Vallarta gay nightlife scene – the clubs, bars, discos, cantinas and lounges are on the South Side/Zona Romantica, and three are just north of the Cuale River which runs through the middle of town. The gay bars are within a rather short distance of each other. Sunset will find the gay crowd poolside at Vallarta Cora and at the rooftop of the Blue Chairs Sunset restaurant-bar which has daily events.

Tourists tend to go out for dinner and then for conversation and drinks at Apaches, Garbo, Sama, Frida, La Noche, or Los Amigos. Later on they go to the disco clubs after midnight until the early morning hours. People will often walk the circuit from one place to the next until they end up at nightclub Manana or Paco’s Ranch (formerly Club Paco Paco) to dance, drink and cruise. The stripper shows at several nightclubs are popular – Anthropology and Manana take the lead with quite a few handsome strippers in their line ups. Btw, the legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. I also advise you to keep track of your tab at all the gay clubs, bars and restaurants in town. In general the Puerto Vallarta gay nightlife and entertainment scene in the discos tends to start late, usually livening up around midnight or so, and of course weekends are the most active.

Antropology – Central/Downtown – 101 Morelos, Plaza Rio Cuale.

“The study of Man.” Anthropology generally features close to 20 male strippers who give near continuous entertainment from 9pm to 4am nightly. The strippers are attractive, extra friendly and very entertaining as one would be by dancing on the bar, the floor and the table.

A great place to come alone or bring friends. The bar staff just happens to be good looking as well. Promotes itself as Mexico’s only gay male stripper bar where the strippers take it all off – for men only. Cover, but free passes are often available at many gay hotels and the gay beach. Club can be booked in advance, on a limited basis, for private parties. Daily 9pm-4am

Apaches – South Side/Zona Romantica – 439 Olas Altas. Tel: 222-4004, 222-5235

Marianne owns and operates this festive martini and cocktail bar in Puerto Vallarta, serving all kinds of delicious drinks. This small and cozy locale has been popular with gay and straight locals and tourists alike for over ten years. Inside and sidewalk seating. Next door is Apaches Bistro serving steaks, seafood and continental fare from 5pm to midnight. Happy hour, 5pm-7pm. Open Mon-Sat, 5pm-2am.

Blue Sunset Rooftop Bar and Restaurant – Los Muertos beach – Calle Malecon y Almendro #4. Tel: 222-5040

At the Blue Chairs gay hotel resort with its rooftop restaurant, lovely views of Banderas Bay and a small wading pool; serving a variety of food, including Mexican and seafood. Mon is Karaoke night, 8pm; Tues is gay bingo, 7:30pm; Weds with The Dirty Bitches Show, 8:30pm; Thurs is Pool T-dance and Diana’s after-Cruise party at 5pm; Fri is Sunset T-dance pool party at 5pm; Sat is Blue Hombre Male Dancers show, 8pm; Sun with The Dirty Bitches Show, 8:30pm. Call for further info. Happy hour 10am-5pm. Daily, 10am-midnight

That’s where Puerto Vallarta, Mexico comes in. It is simply that perfect mix of sunshine, cute boys, great food, tasty cocktails, partying and relaxation.

The center of the action is at the southern end of Playa Los Muertos. The section of beach in front of the Blue Chairs Resort is where the boys go for a splash of color. This area, where the chairs are blue, and the adjacent area, where the chairs are green, (Ritmos Beach Café) are where you’ll find most boys during the day.

The bars are clustered in two areas of the “Zona Romantica”–Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town–one set along Olas Altas and another along Lazaro Cardenas. And dinner options are aplenty in the Old Town or El Centro, Vallarta’s downtown.

You’ll find plenty of ways to wait out the daytime until your next trip to the bars and discos. During the daytime you might be inspired to do some shopping or browse through the many art galleries in Vallarta. We have dedicated separate pages for those, so we won’t repeat much about those ideas here. Vallarta has many options for relaxation during the day including our gay beaches and many organized gay cruises and tours. Unless your accommodations have satellite TV, the half dozen channels that are in English on the cable system here just might not do! So, what else is there after TV in the daytime? Part of the reason to visit the tropics is to enjoy the outdoor life that our climate makes possible.

It’s usually called the blue chairs, which really is one beach restaurant’s section of this special beach on the southside of Puerto Vallarta. Los Muertos is the busiest beach area in Vallarta, and one section of it is very gay: around the beach concession commonly known as the blue chairs. Spread out under little palapa (thatched) umbrellas are literally blue beach chairs, where our kind of people tend to hang out. So many, in fact, that the gay beach area always included the green chairs of the Ritmos Cafe concession area too, immediately south of the blue chairs.

The gay beach continues to expand. North of the original gay beach is the new Bite Me! Beach Club in front of the Blue Seas Resort a large gay timeshare/hotel property. This gay beach club is a bit more upscale and, of course, is open to the public. A short way further north is The Beach House, a small gay owned beach club with very classy service and great food.

In these beach clubs you’ll find hundreds of gay men and women sitting under the palapas or on towels nearer the surf line, soaking up the hot Mexican sun and socializing with gays from all over the world.

Once at the beach you’ll immediately come in contact with the many beach vendors, who are licensed and very territorial. There are various things being sold, all by differing vendors, since there are separate licenses for each kind of item. You’ll be offered fruit, ice cream, fresh pies, newspapers, silver jewelry, clothing items, tickets to cruises and tours, Mexican blankets, and many more items. This is the place to bargain, you should never pay the asking price, although even with great bargaining skills you won’t get as good a price here as when you shop for these items away from the beach. After a while it can get irritating to some, because these vendors keep coming around. Our recommendation is to stay relaxed and get used to saying politely (but firmly) “no, gracias” and don’t let it bother you.

The beach is easy to find, it is less than a quarter mile south of the pier located at the foot of Francisca Rodriguez Street. The blue and green chairs are marked on our map (see map). In case your gaydar isn’t working when you get there and you need help finding the place, the Blue Chairs flies a rainbow flag on top of their restaurant building. If taking a taxi to the beach it is best to tell the driver “Blue Chairs – Los Muertos.”
